Dozens arrrested in Northern Nigeria as anti-gay law comes into force [SEE PICS]

        

Dozens of gay men have been arrested in northern Nigeria under a draconian anti-gay law that makes same-sex marriage a crime punishable by up to 14 years in jail, human rights activists say.

The law was signed in secret by members of Nigeria’s House of Representatives in Abuja on December 17 and by the president on January 7, although there was no public announcement.

The Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act criminalizes same-sex marriage and provides for up to 14 years in jail. Membership or support of gay organizations, associations or clubs carries a penalty of up to 10 years’ imprisonment.

The new law reflects a highly religious and conservative society that largely considers homosexuality a deviation. In areas of northern Nigeria law is enforced by Islamic Shariah courts and homosexuals can be stoned to death.

Dorothy Aken’Ova of Nigeria’s International Center for Reproductive Health and Sexual Rights said that police in Bauchi state have drawn up a list of 168 allegedly gay men, 38 of whom have been taken into custody so far.        

       
  Activists have suggested that some Nigerian homosexuals may have already fled the country.

The law has drawn widespread international condemnation from countries including the United States, Canada and Britain, Nigeria’s former colonial power, as well as by a host of non-governmental organizations such as AIDS-Free World, which in an open letter appealed to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon for “guidance and leadership” to ensure that “the global response to HIV is neither paralyzed at this critical time, nor set on a disastrous reverse course”.

Dr Heather Collister of the Geneva-based International Service for Human Rights (ISHR) said in a statement that the law “was manifestly incompatible with international human rights standards and must be repealed”.

“In addition to targeting same-sex relations, the law targets the work of human rights defenders, effectively criminalising their work,” she added.

The Initiative for Equal Rights (TIER), a Nigeria-based LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) organization, tweeted that “government should think about development and not sex between two consensual adults. Stop chasing shadow people”.

In December, the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Assocation (ILGA) said that Nigeria’s law “will not only incite increased violence against LGBT people, but it will also justify and legalize that violence”.

Some observers have suggested the anti-gay law is being used to draw attention away from Nigeria’s multiple armed conflicts, religious tensions, corruption and under-development, as well as to curry public favour ahead of Jonathan’s expected 2015 re-election bid.

The Initiative for Equal Rights (TIER), a Nigeria-based LGBT organisation, tweeted that “government should think about development and not sex between two consensual adults. Stop chasing shadow people”.

A study of 39 nations around the world by the U.S. Pew Research Center found that 98 percent of Nigerians believe society should not accept homosexuality, making the country the world’s least tolerant when it comes to LGBT issues.

On Monday, presidential spokesman Reuben Abati said that “this is a law that is a reflection of the beliefs and orientation of the Nigerian people”.

Nigeria is one of 38 African countries – about 70 percent of the continent - that have adopted anti-gay legislation, and several African leaders have publicly warned that they would not let foreign powers dictate to them on the matter.

Among the countries still considering similar legislation is Uganda, where in December the national parliament passed a bill which would punish “aggravated” homosexual acts with life sentences, as well as penalize those who do not report gay activity. The law currently awaits the signature of the country’s long-serving president, Yoweri Museveni.

Shawn Gaylord, advocacy counsel at the Washington-based Human Rights First, said that “government leaders around the world, including President Musaveni…will be watching to see how the international community responds to legislation that discriminates against the LGBT community”.

Stealing runs through her veins the way blood runs through yours!……This actress may not be a household name for you and i but she is slowly edging a name for herself as a thief…a thief who has keys that can open any door that you think you may have locked.

Yetunde is not a first time thief though,Her matter was in the news in February 2013, when it was reported that she was arrested for robbery by the police in Alade, in Somolu area of Lagos State. She was later taken to court by the police for prosecution, but she was discharged and acquitted after the court said her prosecutor didn’t present a proper case that could lead to her conviction.

This is what happened……..again!

On Sunday Morning of January 12,2014,there was a loud noise in Magodo phase 2,No 15 Ibitayo street to be precise and people were shouting ”thief thief”! and running after a lady in a black dress …the lady in the black dress was running like a horse without shoes,running inside a walled estate…

unfortunately for her,before she could get to the gate,the security on duty mobilised and caught her.                  
 She was escorted back to number 15 Ibitayo street where she had been caught inside the master bedroom with a bunch of master keys hidden in her brassiere.

Funny enough the occupants of this house are not friends with the actress and have never met her before or share close friends with her but something strange may be the missing link.

A day before their Nanny resigned from the job stating she could no longer do it…strange? probably a coincidence.

The occupants of the flat had gone to church but the sister to the head of the family arrived home a little early to attend to her business…*now imagine this scenario*

She put the key into the lock,opened the door,goes inside to find Yetunde who was startled and started stammering,she was asked what she was doing there and after mumbling some mumbo jumbo,she exited the flat and ran with her legs touching the back of her head……..there were cries of ”thief” to attract others and after they caught her,she was beaten to a pulp,questioned and handed over to the Police after she implicated a lot of innocent people in her story….these people however arrived the venue to clear their names after agreeing that they know her.

Yetunde’s younger sister was called on the phone to come and see her sister who had been involved in an accident but the sister refused that she would come to the venue and hung up the phone.

According to the report Yetunde insisted she gone gone to wait for a friend inside the flat….

She could not answer how she found herself inside until she was searched and a bunch of master keys found inside her brassiere.

In Febuary 2013,Yteunde was arrested for stealing a bunch of master keys…she was sent to kiri kiri prison and after a few months there,she gained her freedom in November 2013 and in December 2013 she granted an interview describing how her friends set her up

Yetunde, who is in the Odunfa Caucus of the Yoruba film industry headed by veteran actors; Taiwo Hassan aka Ogogo and Yinka Quadri, alleged that her friends set her up, which was why she went through the bitter experience, she said it was all because of a little misunderstanding and disclosed that she had since stopped her relationship with those who implicated her. She disclosed that her friends, who got her into trouble, even behaved as if they were trying to help her out of the case, but that they were actually behind her being thrown into the police net and taken to court.

Yetunde is currently being detained for attempted theft and possession of a bunch of master keys….probably the same one she was accused of stealing last year but acquitted because they found nothing on her.

*I cannot say anything but that God should heal this young woman of this spirit of theft that she is wearing on her body like a second skin…..really sad and i am sorry about the embarrassment this will cause her family and friends…..but i am sure they sleep with one eye open,expecting news like this?

An online service called Mobical is free and it works with most mobile phones from Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and so on. You first need to setup Mobical on the old phone and it will create a backup of your phone contacts in the cloud. Now setup Mobical on the new phone using the same credentials and it will automatically download all the contacts from the cloud to your new phone.
Then there’s Google Sync, a cloud based service that works with BlackBerry, iPhone, Nokia   and most other mobile phones that are SyncML capable. Google Sync keeps your phone’s address book in sync with your Google Contacts. Therefore, if you now install Google Sync on both your old and new phone, they’ll have the same phone book entries automatically.
Android based phones can sync with Google Contacts out of the box – you can then export Google Contacts out as a CSV file and copy it to any other phone manually via the desktop tools.  HTC even offers a desktop utility called HTC Sync that you may use to synchronize Outlook contacts with your Android phone. This will be handy when you want to copy your HTC’s phone book to another phone that is not web-enabled.

Social sites that are often blocked include Google News, Typepad, ebay, blogger, youtube, facebook, MySpace, Pandora, Bebo, Photobucket, Yahoo! Messenger, AOL AIM, last.fm, etc.

There are always legitimate reasons to bypass the internet filters and unblock websites. The following tricks will show how to access all websites at school, college, offices or at home.

1: To access blocked website, type the IP number instead of the URL in the browser address bar. However, if your blocking software maps the IP address to the web server (reverse DNS lookup), the website will still remain blocked.

2: Use a URL redirection service like tinyurl.com or snipurl.com. These domain forwarding services sometimes work as the address in the the url box remain the redirect url and do not change to the banned site.



3: Use Google Mobile Search - Google display the normal HTML pages as if you are viewing them on a mobile phone. During the translation, Google removes the javascript content and CSS scripts and breaks a longer page into several smaller pages.



4: Enter the URL in Google or Yahoo search and then visit the cached copy of the page. To retrieve the page more quickly from Google's cache, click "Cached Text Only" while the browser is loading the page from cache.

5: There are anonymizer websites who will fetch the blocked web page from their servers and display them to you. As far as the service provider is concerned, you are viewing the page on the Anonymizer website and not the blocked site.

6: You can access blocked or restricted websites by using Yahoo Babelfish or Google Translate language tools as a proxy server.

You just have to invoke the Google translate service with the same language pair like English to English. Assuming that Google is accessible in your school, you should be able to access any website with this method -barbelfish proxy



7: Anonymous Surfing - Browse the internet via free proxy server. A proxy server (or proxies) is a normal computer that hides the identity of computers on its network from the Internet.

Which means that only the address of the proxy server is visible to the world and not of those computers that are using it to browse the Internet. Just visit any proxy server with your Web browser and enter a URL or the address of the blocked website.

1. Educate your children about the dangers of sharing information online with strangers. Family members should talk in detail about privacy and the web.
2. Place the computer in the living area of your home from where you can easily see the screen so you’ll have some idea about activities that children are doing on the computer including the websites they are visiting frequently.
3. Orkut is an open social network – that means you can easily see who’s in the friends’ list of your children and what kind of text notes (or scraps) are they exchanging with each.

Finally, to block websites on your home computer without investing in expensive software, here’s the trick (for Windows PCs):


Step 1: Click the Start button and select Run. Now type the following text in that Run box:



Step 2: You will see a new notepad window on your screen containing some cryptic information. Don’t panic. Just goto the last line of the file, hit the enter key and type the following:
